Role of Non-Structural Sugar Metabolism in Regulating Tuber Dormancy in White Yam (Dioscorea rotundata)

Changes in sugar composition occur continuously plant tissues at different developmental stages. Tuber dormancy induction, stability, and breaking are very critical transitions yam crop production. Prolonged tuber after physiological maturity has constituted a great challenge genetic improvement productivity. In the present study, biochemical profiling of non-structural tubers during was performed to determine role regulation. Two genotypes white species, one local genotype (Obiaoturugo) improved (TDr1100873), were used for this study. Tubers sampled 42, 56, 87, 101, 115, 143 days (DAPM). Obiaoturugo exhibited short dormant phenotype sprouted 101-DAPM, whereas TDr1100873 long 143-DAPM. Significant metabolic changes observed parameters, dry matter, moisture content from 56-DAPM, TDr1100873, significant 101-DAPM. It that onset these occurred point when both matter 60%, indicating 60% might be threshold sprouting. Non-reducing sugars increased by 9–10-fold sprouting genotypes, which indicates their key regulation yam. This result implicates some metabolites can targeted manipulation crop.
